Selecting Sheets for a Custom Fit
If you are currently using a hospital bed or are considering purchasing one for your home, how should you choose sheets for the mattress?
Mattresses for hospital beds are not the same size as those for king, queen, full, or twin beds. A hospital crib sheet is typically 36 inches wide by 80 inches long. Certain mattresses can be extended up to 84 inches in length. However, there are broader mattresses available for bariatric hospital beds. Determine the mattress dimensions prior to purchasing sheets.
However, you will quickly discover that twin sheets will not fit a twin hospital mattress. Typically, a twin-size normal bed mattress measures 39 x 75 inches.
To suit a hospital bed mattress, you will need to use a twin XL sheet. Additionally, they are referred to as extended twins or extra-long twins.
Fitted Sheets for Hospital Beds
The fitted sheet's measurement is crucial for proper fit on the mattress and comfort for caregiver and patient. If the fitted sheet is too short, it is impossible to stretch it. Using an excessively long fitted sheet makes it harder to tuck under the mattress on a hospital bed. Any sheet that is excessively long and falls to the floor poses a trip hazard to everyone.
A fitted sheet for a hospital bed for a twin extra-long mattress is typically 39 inches broad by 80 inches long. Additionally, the depth of the mattress dictates the fit of a fitted sheet. The majority of hospital bed mattresses are six inches thick, but some are substantially thicker.
A gel cover or a foam topper placed over the mattress on a hospital bed increases the mattress's depth, necessitating a deeper corner or pocket on the fitted sheet. A good foam topper can offer two or more inches of depth to your mattress, which you must account for when fitting a fitted sheet.
Prior to purchasing sheets, it is necessary to determine the depth of the mattress, including the gel cover or foam topper. As a guide, the following are typical mattress depth dimensions from a sheet manufacturer.
7 to 9 inches standard; 10 to 15 inches deep
Increase the amount to account for the added depth of a foam topper. Confirm the mattress and topper measurements together. If you want to save money on sheets, you can use a twin XL fitted sheet with a twin full flat sheet. As the top flat sheet, a conventional twin flat sheet (usually 66 x 96 inches) or full flat sheet (generally 81 x 96 inches) will suit the extra-long bed. These can be chosen in complementary solid colors or in complementary patterns and colors. Thus, the dimensions of the hospital bed mattress, plus the depth of any mattress topper, are necessary to estimate the size of the sheets required.
